“I am overwhelmed and honoured”

– I am overwhelmed and profoundly honoured to be the recipient of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial award for 2016. As a child I modelled myself on Pippi Longstocking – desperate to grow up brave enough to sail the seven seas, strong enough to lift a horse, unconventional enough to live by my own rules.

– Every year I scan the list of nominations, mentally selecting my favourites, choosing my shortlist from all the extraordinary talent around the world. It is a huge honour simply to be on the list. Every one of us – writers, illustrators, promoters of reading – has worked to enrich and expand the imaginations and the internal lives of children. The best that we can do is to invite a child to think deeper and dream bigger – to imagine a better self and a better world. This is our shared responsibility and our privilege.

– In the memory of Astrid Lindgren, and with particular thanks to Pippi, who was brave and just and original and free, I receive the news of my award with wonder and joy. I will do my very best to be worthy of it.
