Received doctorate from Gothenburg University in 1993 with the thesis entitled Bilderboken - på väg mot en teori (The Picture Book - Towards a Theory). Started her academic career as an assistant lecturer at Lund University in 1969. Since 1971 Ulla Rhedin has held various teaching posts at the University of Karlstad. Initiator and course director of an interdisciplinary course on Children and Literature. Has also served as course director for film and cultural studies. Since many years, Ulla Rhedin is lecturing on children's literature to trainee teachers, and run in-service courses and study days for librarians and teachers, often in close cooperation with different Scandinavian authors and illustrators. Member of the Swedish Authors' Fund and, until recently, of the BTJ Group's Library Services Review Board since 1996. Served on the Swedish National Council for Cultural Affairs' working group on support for children's and youth fiction and comics in the late 1980s. Picture book critic for the major Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter, and contributor to articles and essays in Scandinavian journals and anthologies. Awarded the Gulliver Prize in 2002 by the Swedish section of IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) for having increased the understanding of children's and young people's books. Ulla Rhedin recently left her teaching post at Karlstad University to concentrate on her own research and writing, living on an island off the west coast of Sweden. She is a trained leader of ritual dance and storytelling. Her three grown-up children and four grandchildren provide welcome support and advice. |
